Before you visit us, let us answer some questions we often get about the scanning process.
Commercial dress forms, wigheads and department store mannequins are rarely the right size, shape and proportion as real people. When you sew and craft for yourself often, having a much closer replica of your own body and face can make a huge difference in how much time it takes to size and proportion pieces to yourself, as you don’t need to constantly check against a mirror. With a double of yourself, you can just work off of you, whether that’s shaping armour, draping clothing, or styling a wig.
3D scanning, 3D printing and body casts can make a huge difference here, but those things aren’t always accessible to most cosplayers. Since we have the resources and ability, we’re happy to offer affordable options for cosplayers local to the Toronto area (or willing to travel!)
Specifics for any project will vary depending on your needs, but we’ve provided a menu with a rough guideline for what you can expect to pay for a basic version of various body parts. If you have specific needs or requests, feel free to contact us to discuss.
No. In order to have a body scan done, we require you to visit our Toronto studio.
However, if you already have body scan files from another provider, we can still use them to make moulds, casts, and prints provided they are print ready.
Physically, not much. It's someone meticulously moving around you with a special video camera. You have to stay very still for a few minutes and hold the right posture, kind of like getting an x-ray, but it's not uncomfortable.
Mentally and emotionally, your mileage may vary! Many of us have complicated relationships with our bodies, and have never seen our body in a 3D space outside of a mirror, so it can be a little strange to see yourself this way, especially as our scans generally do not have texture on them, so it's like you're looking at yourself made of plasticine. If you feel uncomfortable seeing your body that way, don't worry! We get it, and we promise it's definitely weirder to look at digitally than it will be when you've got the actual duplicate of yourself printed.
Most scans can be completed in 2-5 minutes, but there's a little bit of prep before and after the scan to make sure we get a good one. Plan to be at the studio for about 30-40 minutes at least, but it won't take hours.
- Whatever undergarments you intend to wear with cosplay (ie a push-up bra, a corset, shapewear, etc)
- Form fitting clothing, like leggings or a tight-fitting t-shirt or leotard. Whatever you wear during the scan will show up in the scan, so if your shirt is really rumpled and loose, that's what your scan will look like!
- Your clothing should be a medium to neutral colour; black and dark fabrics don't scan at a good resolution because the scanner can't pick up shadows as well.
- If you'd like to be scanned in just your undergarments, that's OK, we will make arrangements for your privacy.
- If you'd like to be scanned mostly nude, we'd like to request you wear nipple pasties and some sort of seamless, tight-fitting underwear to obscure any genitalia, just for privacy purposes.
- If you'd like a scan that is fitted to your breasts but you would still like to wear a shirt, we can tie a ribbon around you and between your breasts to make sure the fabric doesn't tent across them. It looks and feels so silly but it works!
We aren't offering full body at this time.
We're operating a good quality but still introductory level machine that gets great results for cosplay purposes, but scanning takes a while. Most people can't maintain a completely still posture for long enough to do a whole body, which leads to inaccurate scans.
If you are a skilled life drawing model or similar, we can probably make an exception! But realistically, for most people, there's no point in doing a full body scan anyway; these aren't great for display purposes, and to get your costume pieces on and off, you'll need the pieces to come apart anyway. It's easier to just have multiple forms for different parts of your body because we can pose you better for the scan for best results.
A raw scan is right out of the scanner. It is a solid object with no floating particles or holes, but it's not print ready without some cutting and prepping.
A cleaned up scan has been tidied up a little. Fabric rumples are smoothed, little blemishes (ie a bump from a bra strap) are smoothed out, and the piece has nice flat spots to print on. If applicable, it has a cut up version that is ready for printing.
